Leopard geckos are lucky in that there are relatively few health issues which tend to affect them. However, tail loss is one of these issues. Dropping their tail is a defense mechanism which enables leopard geckos to escape from predators, though it can cause some problems.

A gecko will grow a new tail if they lose theirs, though the tail which they grow back won’t usually look much like the tail they have lost; it tends to be a different shape and is often white rather than its original color. Of course, a gecko doesn’t worry too much about its looks, though you might prefer the way your pet looks with their original tail!

However, the way your pet leopard gecko’s new tail looks isn’t the real problem. The problem is that losing their tail can make your pet less healthy – a gecko which has lost their tail will be stressed and weakened and more susceptible to disease.

If your pet should lose their tail, they’ll need special care to keep them in good health and prevent infection from setting in as their tail grows back. You may want to keep the injured gecko in a different tank (if you currently house your leopard gecko with others). Make sure that the tank is kept very warm; in fact, any time your gecko is sick you should increase the temperature of their tank. They should have plenty of fresh water and food available while they heal as well.

Shedding is another thing which can pose a health hazard to your leopard gecko. Some of these animals have difficulty shedding for a variety of reasons. It may be too cool inside the tank, the humidity level may be too low, they may have a vitamin deficiency (usually it’s more vitamin A that they need) or even be infested with parasites. This is rare, but a leopard gecko with parasites won’t shed. You can check for parasites by looking carefully at their skin, especially between their toes.

If your leopard gecko is unable to shed for too long they can become sick. Rather than letting things get to this point, make sure to properly care for your pet to prevent these problems from occurring in the first place.

When you consider a leopard gecko calcium supplement, keep in mind that calcium is the most important mineral and should be available at all times.

Leopard Geckos by instinct will eat it directly to get more calcium, they will lick up extra as they need it. Occasionally you still need to dust feeder insects. Having a calcium dish is not an alternative, you need to provide both options.

The reason calcium is important is prevent nutritional disorders. A popular method is the “shake and bake” method where the feeder insects are put into a plastic bag, some calcium powder is added in, gently shaken until the insects are coated with the fine powder.

Too much D3 can be as bad as not enough D3. Leopards are nocturnal and do not use UVB, they only need D3 supplemented a couple times a month is all. Just do this when dusting their feeders. Vitamin D is needed to help absorb calcium, however to much vitamin D can hinder it. Most of their vitamin D3 will come from the crickets.

Adults and babies will use a shallow dish or a plastic lid in the cage with an added teaspoon of calcium powder. A gecko will instinctively lick the calcium powder from these as needed. Make sure to dust feeder insects every other feeding with a vitamin supplement for young geckos. Adults use vitamin supplement once a week. Use D3 in the dusting process twice per month. Calcium and vitamin supplements are very essential for the health and longevity of captive reptiles. You can find many different products on the market.

Rep Cal calcium and herptivite a highly recommended calcium and vitamin supplement brand is best.

Another leopard gecko calcium brand choice is the Bone Aid product made by T-Rex which is a pure calcium carbonate product.

Calci-sand is NOT digestible like the

manufacturer would have you believe and is very expensive. Lastly, the colored calcium sand just might turn your geckos different colors. It is best to just avoid all calcium- based sands for the health of your gecko.

For a good sand try the tan colored play sand from places like home depot . The cost runs around $3 for 50 lbs. These kinds of sand do a great job.

Make sure that you provide your leopard gecko supplement to aid healthy growth and living. As with people and most domesticated animals that do not get a complete variety from a natural diet, supplementation is necessary. Doing the basic when caring for your pet gecko will ensure that it has a long, healthy and disease free life. This is possible when done properly and on a regular basis. Make sure that you understand clearly the complete care that it involved with owning a gecko.

For leopard gecko supplements, calcium is the most important mineral and should be available at all times. The best way to do this is make sure that feeder insects are dusted a few time per week and that a small dish of calcium is in the environment at times. Geckos also require phosphorus/vitamin D3 and a good reptile multivitamin once per week.

For young geckos the best practice is to feed them once a day, coat the feeder insects with calcium supplement at each feeding. This also applies to babies and breeding females. To coat or dust the insects put them in a clear plastic bag and gently shake it until the little bugs are all dusty white.

With general vitamin supplementation make sure to alternate the days and should be used sparingly and not on the same day as the calcium.

You can find good vitamins and supplements at your favorite online pet store or at your local pet store.

Getting and setting up your gecko is an investment and making sure that your gecko is healthy is basic to its care. Make sure that you check with your local pet store to get advice about your specific gecko.

Leopard Geckos in the Wild

Leopard geckos are nocturnal lizards, natively found in the deserts of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and parts of India. They absolutely adore the heat and love rocky terrain, making their dwelling under the ground during the dry, desert daytime. Leopard geckos are quite unique because they have real eyelids – which is extremely uncommon to most gecko species – and they also lack flat, adhesive pads on their toes. Instead, leopard geckos use their claws to climb, making them unable to cling to slippery surfaces – as many other reptiles can – though it is extremely useful when digging in the dry, desert landscape.

In the wild, lizard geckos tend to live under large rocks or inside subterranean caves, emerging at night to hunt insects such as spiders and crickets – and if they’re feeling exceedingly adventuresome, some leopard geckos may even seek out tiny mammals such as baby field mice.

A well-fed gecko can actually live between 19 and 22 years, with the oldest confirmed leopard gecko living all the way to 27 years old! For this reason, they make good pets for children since your child will be able to grow up with the same animal over the course of many years. In the wild, this means that leopard geckos will breed many times during their life, making it an ethical pet choice, as it is not an endangered species.

The natural coloring of these reptiles tends to be a yellowish, creamy color with black stripes, but years of captive breeding have altered the natural coloring of leopard geckos and caused the introduction of new colors to the species, such as: tangerine, lavender, solid white, and even black spots. Though it may seem strange, leopard geckos have adapted remarkably well to captive breeding programs, and are now one of the premier choices for reptilian pets today.
