Nokia N810 Portable Internet Tablet - The Review

The N810 delivers a 4.1-inch 800X480 touchscreen that is very similar to the system that is found on various predating models. Unlike the other models, the N810 offers a retractable QWERTY keyboard for those that would consider these items helpful. The N810 also integrates an internal GPS receiver and presents an onboard map and navigational software platform. The system also comes with 2 GB of onboard storage and the N810’s memory can be expanded through mini and micro SD cards. The system additionally includes 128 MB of DRAM and its onboard processor, a TI OMAP 2420, clocks speeds of 400 MHz.

The N810 comes with completely functional internet and web 2.0 services. OS2008, is an innovative revision of the Maemo Debian-based OS which is what delivers the many UI and stability improvements. The system offers a Mozilla-based browser which presents the identical Gecko rendering engine Firefox is known for. Additionally, reliable Skype and Google Talk clients are included as well and this makes the N810 a solid Voice Over IP (VOIP) appliance.

The inclusion of a hardware keyboard will be appreciated by most consumers. By eliminating the necessity that the input be made via a touchscreen, the N810 delivers excellent screen real-estate for scenarios where such service may be helpful. The seemingly unusual key positioning may take a while to get used to. But, this should not be a problem once you get the proverbial hang of the device.

The N810’s new OS is being offered with an improved default theme and exciting user interface. There are translucent panes along the top and both sides which allows for the home screen to retain the ability to be visible while maximizing the effectiveness of the unit’s limited screen size. Panel layouts have also been modified to make the icons wider and also placing them in columns. This rendering them a great deal more conducive for thumb interaction work. Unlike the OS2007, home screen applications are draggable in a much better manner. This is a change that makes accidentally manipulating applications a great deal less complex. The N810’s application support has also been significantly improved over past versions as well.

Nokia’s integration of the Gecko engine within its browser brings forth a greater AJAX and HTML rendering experience, the effects of which will be experienced throughout numerous web 2.0 services. Fans of Flash 9 will be pleased to discover it is now supported through a notable upgrade from the 7.0 support in OS2007. The N810’s presence and instant messaging support has been properly integrated into the device to where it shares some of its data with the included address book. Unfortunately, the only supported protocol is Jabber/XMPP which is limited in terms of its ability to work with N810 or XMPP users.

The N810’s internal GPS does work in a decent manner but it requires further additional software purchases so as to gain access to important functions. The initial startup of the process can take time but subsequent warm boots can find satellite signals in less than one minute. The included GPS software and maps can present position and close points of interest, but routing and any other function that would be considered advanced will require a software upgrade.

Nokia’s line of internet tablets delivers excellent new devices devised to blend in with and complement our daily lives. Those buyers seeking an internet tablet that can fill many general roles should look into the excellent choice of the N810.
